Check Your Driver's License Status

Whenever you need or want to check the status of your driver’s license, you can order a driving record report. This record will spell out if your driver’s license is currently valid. Should your license have been revoked or suspended, the report will indicate that according to what’s on record at the DMV. This report will also show points against your license and, in some cases, information on any accidents you have had.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) serves as the main holding tank for all of the state's driving records.

If you get ticketed for speeding or leaving the scene of an accident, for example, it will become a permanent part of your driving history. Even if you relocate across the country or go 34 years without ever being ticketed again, your driving record will never be wiped clean. However, anyone requesting your driving history will only be given your record from the last three years.

The drawback of a stained driving record is that it can be accessed by potential employers and used against you. So the cleaner the record, the less potential for regret.

How to Order Your Driving Record

You cannot obtain your driving record from the DMV over the Internet, but you can order it by mail by filling out a DMV Record Request form. A certified copy of your driving record for the past three years is $6; for your complete record, the fee is $16.

Send the form and the fee to:

  • Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Driver Improvement Unit
  • 120 State St.
  • Montpelier, VT 05603-0001

For someone other than you to request your driving record, they will need to have you sign the release portion of the request form authorizing them to do so.

If you can't wait to find out what your driving record says about you, then snail-mail might be too slow. You can find a number of companies online, such as the one at the top of this page, that will send you your driving record by e-mail or fax in only a few days.
