VERMONT CAR INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

Car insurance is not an option. Vermont law, as detailed in Vermont Annotated Code Chapter 23, makes carrying car insurance as mandatory as holding a license.

When registering for car insurance, make sure you, at the very least, are covered for:

  • $25,000―Death or injury of one person
  • $50,000―Death or injury of two or more persons
  • $10,000―Property damage

You must carry proof of car insurance in your vehicle at all times. If you are asked by a police officer to provide proof but don't have your insurance card on you, you will have 20 days to present evidence before legal fallout begins impacting your wallet.

Repercussions for Being Uninsured

If you are caught not carrying car insurance, you will be issued a ticket that will add two points to your record, and you will be fined $100. You will also have to file proof of Financial Responsibility Insurance (see below) with the DMV.

In addition to these penalties, your license will also be temporarily revoked by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles if you are caught without insurance under the following circumstances:

  • Involved in an accident
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Fleeing a collision
  • Driving in such a reckless manner that it results in the death of another person
  • Driving while your license is suspended or revoked
  • Driving another car without the owner's consent

Financial Responsibility Insurance

Should your license be revoked for lack of auto insurance coverage, you can get it reinstated by providing proof to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles that you have obtained Financial Responsibility Insurance. This is a special type of insurance that covers you, the driver (not the vehicle), regardless of what vehicle you are driving.

Since your insurance company will have to file an SR-22 with the DMV proving you are properly insured, this type of insurance will not be cheap. You must maintain proof of Financial Responsibility Insurance on file at the DMV for three years to keep your license.
